It was just like aligning the car.

Without glasses, Rylan's eyes look like this...



Because his eyesight is so bad, he has to focus really hard to see, especially without his glasses. Without glasses his brain focuses on using only one eye at a time, causing the other one to cross and therefore shutting off all eyesight to the crossed eye. If this happens for too long his eyesight will continue to get worse and he could possibly even go blind. So, the best way to prevent that is to straighten his eyes, so that his brain only has to focus on seeing and not have to worry about keeping his eyes straight.

Last Friday we took Rylan in for a scheduled eye surgery.

After we got up at the crack of dawn and dropped the older boys off at a friends' house, we headed over to the hospital. We gowned up, colored, answered questions, played with toys, played with our new gas mask, answered more questions, received instructions, played more, received more instructions. (you get the idea. we got up at 5 am and had surgery at like 8:30).

They put him to sleep and without any visible incisions removed the muscles from the sides of his eyeballs, aligned his eyes so they were straight and reattached the muscles. His doc said it was very much like aligning the tires on your car (uh... except it was my baby's EYEBALLS...) anyway... he did great. He loved all the popcicles that he got post-op. We were home by noon. He puked all over the minute we walked in the door and then demanded food. After he ate an entire package of crackers and a banana and drank an entire bottle of ginger ale, he felt much better and the rest of the day we had to work at getting him to slow down.

Needless to say without his glasses, his eyes are not straight, but MUCH better and with his glasses, they are pretty much straight. The doctor says that once his eyes completely heal and we can get him the right post op prescription, his eyes should be really straight with his glasses.

I requested some of the gas they used to put him out at the hospital, but they wouldn't let me take any home.
